The 505 course introduces how exposure to hazardous substances occurs in the workplace and explores the methods and technologies used to control exposure and reduce health risks.

As a core module of the BOHS International Certificate of Occupational Hygiene (ICertOH) and OHTA International Certificate (ICertOHTA), it forms part of a six-module qualification pathway. Delivered over five days, the course features practical, instructor-led training in small, interactive groups, supported by workshops, exercises, and assessments. Online participation is also available.

Completion of 6 modules will allow for someone, with the correct experience to apply for an interview to be a full member of the AIOH

  • Describe how airborne contaminants are generated by industrial processes, how this impacts on the control strategy, and how control solutions can thereby be optimised;
  • Recognise the range of approaches to risk reduction embodied in the hierarchy of control and select appropriate strategies for implementation;
  • Describe the meaning of “adequate control”, particularly in relation to personal exposures;
  • Discuss the importance of design considerations in terms of the workplace, process, and plant, as a means of reducing occupational exposures;
  • Describe the principal elements of a local exhaust ventilation system, give examples of typical installations and know how to carry out the necessary measurements to assess whether a local exhaust ventilation system is effective and operating to the design specification;
  • Recognise the limitations of local exhaust hoods and enclosures and the means to optimise their effectiveness;
  • Describe how personal protective equipment programmes may be used in an effective manner;
  • Recognise the impact that control measures may have on other workplace hazards and understand the need to take a holistic approach to the design of control solutions.

Someone wanting to start a career in occuational hygiene and wants to become a full member of the AIOH. No previous experince is needed

This course is delivered on Microsoft Teams. Course materials are delivered in advance to participants including those for practical assessments.

Course participants have the choice of undertaking online exams with BOHS or OHTA to gain their qualification.

In the event of a cancellation, the following fees will apply:

  • Cancellation within 4 weeks of course start date: 50% of total course fee.
  • Cancellation within 2 weeks of course start date: 100% of total course fee.

All course start and finish times are subject to change. Participants will be notified of all the details prior to the commencement of the course.

On successful completion of the module, you will receive an Award of Successful Course Completion for that module.

To obtain the International Certificate, you must complete six modules, including four core subjects and two others chosen from three options.
