The 504 course develops knowledge of occupational hygiene practices relating to fibrous dusts, with a focus on asbestos and other industrial fibres such as mineral fibres, aramids, and carbon. It explores associated health risks, as well as methods for evaluation and control.

As a core module of the BOHS International Certificate of Occupational Hygiene (ICertOH) and OHTA International Certificate (ICertOHTA), it contributes to a six-module qualification pathway. Delivered over five days, the course combines practical, instructor-led training in small, interactive groups with workshops, exercises, and assessments. Online participation is also available.

Completion of 6 modules will allow for someone, with the correct experience to apply for an interview to be a full member of the AIOH

  • Describe the composition, nature and properties of asbestos, machine made mineral and other fibres and their historical uses;
  • Describe the health effects of asbestos and other fibrous materials and apply appropriate exposure limits;
  • Describe the uses of asbestos in buildings and the public health risk that these may pose;
  • Understand the principles of and requirements for asbestos surveys including taking samples and identifying bulk asbestos types by microscopic techniques including relevant safety requirements;
  • Be thoroughly familiar with current good practice in the construction and use of enclosures for asbestos remediation and the use of decontamination units;
  • Understand all the principles of clearance testing, the requirements for measurement and appropriate techniques for post remediation evaluation;
  • Conduct air sampling to determine airborne concentrations of asbestos or other fibres in accordance with defined procedures including microscopic counting techniques;
  • Have the ability to advise on all the various techniques for the management of asbestos in buildings in accordance with good practice.

Someone wanting to start a career in occuational hygiene and wants to become a full member of the AIOH. No previous experince is needed

This course is delivered in a combination of in-person and Microsoft Teams online simultaneously. Course materials are delivered in advance to participants including those for practical assessments.

Course participants have the choice of undertaking online exams with BOHS or OHTA to gain their qualification.

There will be a short answer question “open book” examination with an allowed time of 120 minutes.

In the event of a cancellation, the following fees will apply:

  • Cancellation within 4 weeks of course start date: 50% of total course fee.
  • Cancellation within 2 weeks of course start date: 100% of total course fee.

All course start and finish times are subject to change. Participants will be notified of all the details prior to the commencement of the course.

On successful completion of the module, you will receive an Award of Successful Course Completion for that module.

To obtain the International Certificate, you must complete six modules, including four core subjects and two others chosen from three options.
