501 Measurement of Hazardous Substances

Completion of 6 modules will allow for someone, with the correct experience to apply for an interview to be a full member of the AIOH

• Describe the general approach to health risk assessment, including the role of atmospheric monitoring.
• Select appropriate equipment to measure specific airborne contaminants and devise a suitable sampling strategy.
• Present the results for health risk assessment purposes to comply with relevant legislation.
• The syllabus has been structured to cover seven sections:
  • Risk Assessment
  • Air Sampling Theory and Practice
  • Air Sampling Equipment
  • Sample Analysis
  • Hygiene Standards
  • Biological Monitoring
  • Calculation, Interpretation and Presentation of Results

Someone wanting to start a career in occuational hygiene and wants to become a full member of the AIOH. No previous experince is needed

This course is delivered on Microsoft Teams. Course materials are delivered in advance to participants including those for practical assessments.

Course participants have the choice of undertaking online exams with BOHS or OHTA to gain their qualification.

There will be a short answer question “open book” examination with an allowed time of 120 minutes.

A separate charge for postage of course material will be calculated for all participants outside Australia.

In the event of a cancellation, the following fees will apply:

• Cancellation within 4 weeks of course start date: 50% of total course fee.
• Cancellation within 2 weeks of course start date: 100% of total course fee.

All course start and finish times are subject to change. Participants will be notified of all the details prior to the commencement of the course.

On successful completion of the module, you will receive an Award of Successful Course Completion for that module.

To obtain the International Certificate, you must complete six modules, including four core subjects and two others chosen from three options.

The Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (AIOH) has the requirement in their “Member Application Manual” that to be a Full Member that applicants must have a first degree or diploma in science or engineering acceptable to the Council, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the Council (Section 3.2). An equivalent qualification acceptable to the Council includes the OHTA International Certificate in occupational hygiene (ICertOHTA) (Section 3.3.1). Once a full Member, the applicant can become a Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH)®, if they meet additional criterion for experience.

The 501 Course offers accreditation pathways to International Certificate in Occupational Hygiene with BOHS (ICertOH) and OHTA (ICertOHTA).

Both certifications requires a learner to complete to six (6) modules that includes four core modules or subjects and two optional modules or subjects.

• 505 Control of Hazardous Substances;
• 507 Health Effects of Hazardous Substances;

Optional subjects:

• M502 Thermal Environment;
• M504 Asbestos and Other Fibres;
• M506 Ergonomics Essentials.

Occupational Hygienists who have COH status are also eligible to gain COH points for their attendance and completion of the ICertOH modules.

For each 5 day module COHs will gain 1 point per day with a total of 5 points.
