Vibration Exposure Assessment & Management

Hand-arm and whole-body vibration: measure, manage, protect.

Vibration exposure in the workplace is a hazard that is frequently underestimated – not because its effects are minor, but because they develop gradually and are often attributed to ageing or unrelated causes before the occupational link is recognised.

Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) – encompassing vascular, neurological and musculoskeletal disorders – and whole-body vibration (WBV) effects on the spine and musculoskeletal system are recognised occupational diseases with significant implications for worker health and quality of life.

In the Australian mining and resources sector, vibration exposure is widespread. Operators of haul trucks, graders, loaders and other mobile plant are exposed to significant whole-body vibration across long shifts. Workers using pneumatic drills, grinders, jackhammers, impact wrenches and similar handheld tools accumulate hand-arm vibration exposure that can – without proper management – lead to irreversible nerve and vascular damage over time.

RED OHMS Group provides vibration exposure assessment and management services to help you understand your workers’ exposure profiles, identify the equipment and tasks that represent the greatest risk and implement control strategies that are practical, cost-effective and proportionate to the hazard.

Capabilities

Measurement of vibration accelerations at the operator interface using calibrated tri-axial accelerometers and data loggers, with exposure calculations reported against the exposure action value (EAV) and exposure limit value (ELV) per ISO 5349 (HAV) and ISO 2631 (WBV). Includes task analysis and daily exposure (A(8)) calculation.

Systematic evaluation of your mobile plant and handheld tool inventory against vibration emission data, operator exposure duration and maintenance condition to produce a ranked risk register. Identifies high-priority items for immediate intervention.

Development of practical, costed control recommendations including engineering controls (suspension upgrades, anti-vibration mountings, tool replacement), administrative controls (exposure rotation, tool rest protocols) and health surveillance guidance. Control strategies are developed in consultation with your operations team to ensure operational feasibility.

Understanding the Exposure Framework

Australia has adopted the European approach to vibration exposure limits, with an eight-hour energy-equivalent acceleration of 2.5 m/s² (A(8)) as the EAV and 5.0 m/s² as the ELV for hand-arm vibration.

For whole-body vibration, the EAV is 0.5 m/s² and the ELV is 1.15 m/s². Workers whose exposures exceed the EAV require enhanced health surveillance and control intervention; those approaching or exceeding the ELV must have immediate engineering or administrative controls implemented.

Vibration emission data published by equipment manufacturers – the so-called ‘nameplate values’ – are typically measured under standardised laboratory conditions and can significantly underestimate real-world exposures on mine sites, where ground conditions, equipment condition and operator technique all influence actual vibration transmission. Field measurement under realistic operating conditions is the only reliable way to characterise your workforce’s actual exposure.

FAQs

Early indicators of HAVS include tingling or numbness in the fingers (particularly after work or in cold conditions), blanching of the fingertips (white finger), reduced grip strength and difficulties with fine motor tasks. For WBV, low back pain is the primary symptom. If workers are reporting these symptoms, or if your site uses significant handheld power tools or mobile plant, a vibration assessment is warranted. RED OHMS can conduct both a preliminary desktop screening and a full field measurement campaign.

Exposure time limits can be an effective administrative control, but they need to be based on actual measured vibration levels for the specific tools and tasks involved – not just manufacturer data. They also require robust management systems to ensure compliance on shift. RED OHMS will design a control strategy that integrates time limits with other engineering and administrative measures appropriate to your situation.
