The Dangers of Working with Asbestos

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) recently issued a great infographic on the inherent dangers of working with and around Asbestos. They have encouraged this to be shared around the world.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material that is found throughout the world. Because of it’s heat resistant and insulating properties, asbestos was used in a wide range of manufactured products including insulation, cement, plaster and textiles. Asbestos can still be present in old buildings and is safe unless it is disturbed.

Those who come into contact with Asbestos are exposed to significant health risks such as Asbestosis, Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma. The hazards occur when Asbestos fibres become airborne and can be inhaled without the worker’s knowledge.

In order to control Asbestos and protect workers exposure to it, a robust control management program must be implemented. The infographic below outlines the measures that need to be taken when working with this hazardous material.
